Support Groups Joining a support group is a great way to connect with others who understand what you are going through, learn about Parkinson disease and ways to cope with the challenges that come with having PD. Our support groups are for: People new to PD People who have had PD a long time People with Young Onset of PD People who are caregivers or relatives of those with PD Some groups meet via Zoom and some groups meet at the APDA Missouri office and in locations across the bi-state region. We encourage you to find the one that best meets your needs. Some groups are specifically for certain people – like care partners or those with young onset Parkinson’s. Others are open to anyone who wishes to attend. A group may invite guest speakers, plan an event or just discuss topics of interest to the participants. All support groups are led by a trained facilitator. If you can’t find a group in your area, please let us know. If this happens, we typically try to call and/or email everyone to let them know. For support groups in other locations, please check with leader. We will also put a notice on our homepage. Are you looking to give back to the community in a meaningful way? If so, the American Parkinson Disease Association’s Missouri Chapter is looking for current or retired mental health professionals or healthcare professionals to volunteer a few hours a month as a Parkinson’s support group facilitator. Support groups offer an invaluable opportunity for families living with Parkinson’s to learn, share resources, and support one another. Groups meet monthly and are needed in many areas throughout Missouri & Central/Southern Illinois. APDA provides initial training, a facilitation guide, and ongoing resources for facilitators You do not need a background in Parkinson’s. Effective facilitators have good communication and group facilitation skills. Average volunteer time is 3-5 hours per month If you are interested and are a current or retired healthcare or mental health professional, please complete this survey and we will be in touch as needs arise in the community.
